Molecular and Genomics Core Facility
Support
The UMMC Molecular and Genomics Core Facility (MGCF) is supported through several extramural funding mechanisms, including three large Center grants, NIH-R01 awards, and through the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology and Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. This allows us to provide highly competitive prices to institutional and external researchers in Mississippi wanting to conduct genetic and genomic studies.
Molecular Center of Health and Disease (MCHD)
The mission of MCHD is to employ innovative molecular and physiological approaches to study health, onset and progression of disease, and interaction with pathogens, with the goal of understanding the breadth of information from the molecular level to the whole organism. This mission will be facilitated by developing new and innovative omics technology and computational biology capabilities at UMMC.
Mississippi INBRE (MS-INBRE)
Mississippi IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) is a network of colleges and universities, designed to build a biomedical research infrastructure in Mississippi. Our mission is to reach out to Mississippians in order to improve health throughout the state and to engage talented researchers and students in biomedical research projects that will increase the state’s research competitiveness as well as impact the health of citizens of Mississippi. The scientific focus of Mississippi INBRE is obesity, cancer and sexually transmitted diseases.
Cardiorenal and Metabolic Diseases Research Center (CMDRC)
The CMDRC provides infrastructure for a multidisciplinary group of basic, clinical and population scientists working on the common theme of obesity, cardiorenal and metabolic diseases and to facilitate their collaborations. Cardiorenal and metabolic diseases are the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in the U.S., and Mississippi has the highest prevalence in the nation. These disorders usually cluster and are highly interdependent. For example, obesity and associated diabetes may cause cardiovascular and renal disease.
Citations
For those researchers that have utilized the MGCF in the past or plan to in the future, please remember to cite the below funding acknowledgement in oral or poster presentations and most importantly when submitting a manuscript for publication. The main measure of productivity for the MGCF is through publications. All grants need to be included (not just those you may be directly associated with) as without the support of all these funding sources the MGCF would not have sufficient resources to function.
“The work performed through the UMMC Molecular and Genomics Facility is supported, in part, by funds from the NIGMS, including the Molecular Center of Health and Disease (P20GM144041), Mississippi INBRE (P20GM103476) and Obesity, Cardiorenal and Metabolic Diseases- COBRE (P30GM149404).
